Microbes have essential roles in the ecosystems and industries that support civilization. They are the primary catalysts for production of "cultured products" that include baked goods, beer, wine, cheese, and chocolate. Furthermore, many fuels, medicines, antibiotics, and chemicals are now produced by biosynthesis within engineered microbes. Yet, because only a few microbes have been studied, there remains untapped biosynthetic potential in microbes. In the Young Lab, we develop tools driven by genomics and synthetic biology to unlock the biosynthetic potential of microbes.
